Home Design Trends On the Rise in 2026

To get an idea of the home design trends of 2026, we’ve looked back at the custom builds and remodels we completed across Northeast Wisconsin this past year. In 2025 several of the emerging trends we saw over the last couple of years have now firmly taken root.

We continue to see a shift away from the overly-minimalist look in favor of a more traditional aesthetic, but with a modern twist—so that it feels intentional and personalized for the homeowners lifestyle. The all-white and gray palette of the last decade is being replaced by warm, rich colors paired with neutrals that add depth and interest to a room.

Homeowners continue to prioritize multigenerational living, whether they are creating a comfortable space for an aging parent or designing a welcoming guest suite for visiting family. Functional mudrooms also remain a top priority, with a focus on maximizing organization to keep main living areas tidy. Ultimately, we’re seeing a shift toward homes that support the practicalities of everyday life rather than simply chasing a fleeting aesthetic.

Traditional Design - Modern Farmhouse was the dominant home style of the last decade. But over the last couple of years, we have been seeing a shift back towards Traditional Craftsman, Modern Craftsman, and Modern Cottage style homes. These are truly classic designs that are always in style, especially here in Northeast Wisconsin as they naturally complement our region’s landscape - whether a rural lot, wooded, or waterfront property.

Craftsman-style homes are noted for their low-pitched roofs, covered front porches with tapered posts, and the use of natural-looking materials such as cedar impression plank siding and shakes, with stone accents. Modern Cottage-style homes combine clean lines, with pitched gable roofs, covered front porches, and large windows and sliding glass doors to maximize natural light.

Warm Wood Tones and Rich Palettes - Over the last two years, we have seen homeowners transition away from the all-white kitchens and are increasingly embracing natural wood stains for cabinetry, flooring, and accents. Homeowners want to create spaces that feel warm, comfortable, and more personal.

We are seeing more layers of colors throughout the home, especially in the kitchen where we may see natural wood cabinets, neutral or earth tone backsplashes, with an accent island in earthy greens or blues or darker wood tone. The look adds depth and character to the space.

High-Function Custom Built-ins - One of the greatest benefits of a custom-built home is the ability to tailor storage solutions to your specific needs. Whether it’s floor-to-ceiling library shelving in a home office, a window seat with storage, or custom cabinetry in the dining and living rooms, built-ins are being used to make homes feel more organized and intentionally curated, adding both value and personality to your space.

Multigenerational Living & Universal Design - Whether it’s a dedicated mother-in-law suite for an aging parent or a secondary primary suite for visiting family, the multi-generational footprint remains a top priority. These spaces allow both privacy and comfort for everyone in the home, and adapt as your family’s needs evolve over the decades.

Hand-in-hand with this, "aging-in-place" features have become the modern standard in custom home design. Elements such as main-floor primary suites, zero-step entries, walk-in showers, and wider doorways are no longer specialty requests—they are must-have features that ensure a home remains accessible and comfortable for residents and guests of all ages.

Mudroom Design - As the primary transition point between the outdoors and the home’s interior, the high-functioning mudroom plays an important role in the overall enjoyment of your home. Because this area manages various daily tasks—including laundry, mail sorting, and gear storage—intentional design is essential. Having a designated space for your daily items helps keep everything contained in one convenient location, making it easier for your family to get out the door in the morning and providing a sense of calm when you return at the end of the day.

These trends reflect a desire for homes that are not only beautiful and functional but also conducive to a healthy, fulfilling, and enjoyable lifestyle. We are excited to continue working with homeowners to bring their specific needs and design visions to life in 2026 and beyond.
