Home Design Trends We're Expecting to See in 2025
2024 was a busy year for us, with many custom home builds and remodel projects. These experiences provide insights into the evolving preferences of homeowners. Based on our current projects and the forecasts of industry experts, here are some key home design trends we anticipate seeing more of in 2025:
Health and Wellness As a Priority:
- Fitness Rooms & Home Gyms: More and more homeowners are seeking the convenience of having a well-equipped fitness room in their home. This is showing up in new floor plan designs, as well as homeowners wanting to renovate an existing space into a dedicated workout room, like a basement or underused family room.
- Saunas, Spa-Like Bathrooms, & Steam Rooms: Enhancing relaxation and well-being, homeowners continue to focus on creating spa-like environments in their bathrooms. Soaking tubs remain a key feature in the bathroom. We are also seeing saunas and showers with steam features becoming increasingly popular additions. These luxurious features offer a spa-like experience within the comfort of one's own home.
Traditional Design:
This one may come as a bit of a surprise, but after many years of contemporary, modern farmhouse, and streamlined design, we are seeing more people embrace their love of traditional design and finishes. This is especially prominent in kitchens, foyers, and bathrooms.
- Rich Wood Tones: We're observing a resurgence of interest in warm, classic wood tones for cabinetry. Mid-to-darker stains are making a comeback, adding a touch of timeless sophistication to kitchens and other living spaces.
Customized Spaces for Entertaining and Hobbies:
Dedicated spaces for entertainment and hobbies remains a strong focus for new homeowners. As a result of the pandemic, entertaining at home, and the pursuit of art, hobbies and crafts has become more popular and remains so even today.
- Entertaining: Homeowners want a relaxing space to gather with family and friends that almost feels like your favorite pub, but without the crowds and line for the bathroom. Coffee bars, wine cellars, lounges and full bars, game rooms, and theater rooms are all a focus for home entertainment.
- Hobbies: They are also including specific spaces where they can enjoy their hobbies and keep things neatly and conveniently stored. Whether it's a music room, an art studio, or a workspace for hobbies, homeowners are increasingly seeking out dedicated spaces for creative pursuits and personal interests.
Bringing the Outdoors In:
A major priority of homeowners is ease of indoor and outdoor living. They want to seamlessly blend these spaces to maximize the full enjoyment of their home and their beautiful, natural surroundings. This is achieved in several ways.
- Expansive Glass: Large, expansive windows, transom and clerestory windows, and sliding glass doors blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. They maximize natural light and create a seamless flow between living spaces and the surrounding natural beauty.
- Outdoor Living Spaces: Sunrooms, screen porches, and covered patios continue to be highly desirable. They provide comfortable sanctuaries to enjoy the outdoors nearly year-round, regardless of the weather. Outdoor cooking areas, equipped with gas grills, beverage refrigerators, and counter space, are also becoming increasingly popular.
Multigenerational Living:
- Flexible Floor Plans: To accommodate the needs of multigenerational families, we're seeing a growing emphasis on flexible floor plans. This includes features like separate living spaces with en-suite bathrooms for older relatives or adult children, as well as secondary houses or carriage houses on the property. This also includes designing in features to make moving through the home safe and accessible for all ages, including aging-in-place considerations, elevators, and grab bars.
These trends reflect a desire for homes that are not only beautiful and functional but also conducive to a healthy, fulfilling, and enjoyable lifestyle. We are excited to continue working with homeowners to bring their specific needs and design visions to life in 2025 and beyond.
