Gary and Cheryl Shefchik Retire from PortSide Builders

After an impressive tenure of nearly fifty years at PortSide Builders, Gary Shefchik, has officially retired. His last day at the company was May 26th.  Gary has been at PortSide Builders from the very beginning, working alongside his siblings, Larry, Paul, Alan, Mark, Sue, and Fran Shefchick, who founded the company in 1977.

Gary began his career in construction in 1974, working with his oldest brother, Tony, who owned Greenbriar Construction. His job was driving his pickup truck to job sites to collect and clean up construction debris. Even though he had a full cast on his leg at the time, he was happy to be doing this job as he had previously been spending months indoors recovering from an accident.

While at PortSide, he served in a variety of roles, starting as a carpenter, and then becoming a foreman, leading a crew for over 13 years. He trained many of the original PortSide construction crew during this time, many of whom have since retired.

He then worked as a construction coordinator for 17 years. In this position, he supervised the construction of numerous homes, condos, and resorts throughout Door County and beyond. These include well-known resorts like the Bay Shore Inn in Sturgeon Bay, Newport Resort in Egg Harbor, and The Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake. He then spent 23 years in estimating and was the main estimator for all projects in Door County and the Fox Valley area.

“I’m proud of my work at PortSide Builders and truly cherish the friendships I’ve made with the homeowners, subcontractors, and my coworkers over the years”, said Gary. He was an integral part of helping build PortSide into the successful company it is today. He will be missed by his coworkers and he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, expertise in the field, diligence, and a positive attitude.

Cheryl Shefchik retired after 23 years. She started as a receptionist in 1979 which she did for about a year. After taking several years off to raise their children, she came back to PortSide in 1988 cleaning both the office and final cleaning for all the homes and finished projects. Cheryl greatly enjoyed working with the PortSide crew and especially loved seeing all the finished homes, remodel jobs, and projects that Portside has done over the years.

A big thank you to Gary and Cheryl for the outstanding contributions they have both made to PortSide during their long career. They have left a lasting legacy with the company and will both be missed. Best wishes to them in this next exciting chapter of their lives!
